Islanders prepare to welcome solar panels

PP-KarimunJawa-PLTSThe islanders on Nyamuk in the Karimunjawa archipelago, Central Java province, have been working hard recently to prepare the ground for receiving solar panels as part of an ESP3 pilot project.

This includes dismantling a tower previously housing a wind turbine that is no longer operational. The ESP3 project will install enough solar PV capacity in three of the Karimunjawa islands (Genting and Parang islands also) so that the villagers no longer have to rely on diesel generators for their electricity, currently limited to six hours a day. When the project is completed, the islands will have enough panels, and batteries for storing energy, to enjoy electricity 24 hours a day. This will open up more time to study, more time for business activities and more time for leisure!
