Burung Indonesia receives grant to continue ecosystem restoration in Hutan Harapan

Hutan Harapan JambiOn 3 July 2015, the Royal Danish Embassy – DANIDA and Burung Indonesia signed an agreement for new grant of 7 million DKK for restoration of Hutan Harapan.

Hutan Harapan is a 98,555 ha former logging concession located in south-central Sumatra, and is one of the only remaining tropical forests of its type. The forest is home to a diverse plant and animal life, including the extremely threatened Sumatran tiger. Surrounded by oil palm or pulp-and-paper plantations, Hutan Harapan is also one of the only remaining forests available to the indigenous forest dwelling tribes, locally known as Bathin Sembilan.

ESP3 Programme Steering Committee approve Review Mission Recommendations, Annual Progress Report 2014 and Workplan 2015-2018

4th PSC Meeting GroupPictureOn 21 May 2015 the ESP3 Programme Steering Committee (PSC) held their fourth regular meeting to assess programme progress and make strategic decisions for the coming programme period. ESP3 has recently undergone a mid-term review and the review recommendations were presented to the PSC for discussion and approval. The recommendations, which include a programme extension for certain programme activities until 2018 and allocation of a ‘bridging fund’ for Harapan Rainforest until end-2015 were approved.

The Danish Ambassador ready to get his shoes dirty for the environment!

Danish Ambassador visit CJThe ESP3 team in Central Java had a great day on 27th May, bringing the Danish Ambassador, Casper Klynge, to the province and showing him some of our work in progress there – not to mention meeting the provincial governor Ganjar Pranowo and mayor of Semarang, Hendrar Prihadi. We made an early morning visit to the Semarang City landfill where ESP3 is working towards installing landfill gas collection and electrification activities that could deliver power to up to 650 homes.

Cleaning up heavy-metal contaminated land in Tegal

CleaningUpTegalESP3 together with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Committee on the Elimination of Leaded Gasoline (KPBB), as well as the Environment Agency and related government agencies from Tegal Regency held a coordination meeting to discuss clean-up of heavy-metal contaminated land, at Tegal Regency environment agency office. Over the past few years, Tegal Regency with the assistance of the Ministry of Environment has made efforts to reduce gradually the impact of toxic substances and hazardous waste of the household metal smelting in the area that has been going on for decades. One approach by the government has been to relocate the smelting from the centre of Pasarean village to a new location in Kebasen village, away from the community.
